Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Conjunctivitis, often called pink eye, is an inflammation or infection of the membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelid. Most of the time, conjunctivitis is not serious, but it may be contagious and should be diagnosed as quickly as possible. To diagnose this problem your doctor will ask about your symptoms. He will note any medications you are taking as well as any other medical conditions you may be experiencing. Finally, your doctor will analyze your eye through a special type of microscope called a slit lamp. With these tests, your doctor may note redness and swelling of the eye, a feeling of itching or burning, or a release of tears and discharge. This discharge may often stick your eyelids together after a night of sleep. For more information, ask your doctor about pink eye.
